Aim and outcome of the course

This course takes students deeper into the studies of European integration and the European Union in particular. By its content and method, the course follows the last year’s course in Political System of the European Union. The syllabus shall be divided in two parts. In the first part, students shall be introduced with development of European integration through emergence and development of European communities and the European Union and diversification of its different sector policies. The second part shall speak about different kinds of integration policies at the present level of development of the European Union. Besides, the goal of this course is the introduction with relationships of internal integration carried out in the EC-EU countries with broader and more general integration processes in entire Europe.

Students of this course should master the development of European integration, emergence and metamorphoses of European communities and European Union. The main goal of the course is obtaining knowledge about the ways in which integration policy is formed, its results in various fields of application, as well as the problems which arise during the expansion of common policy in the EC/EU member states.

Together with the Political System of the European Union, this course should offer the core of knowledge in the field of European studies which, together with other courses in the study program and its module (European integration) offers a sufficient fund of theoretical and practical knowledge for work in various fields of public life.

Theoretical teaching
Introduction to European integration – concept, process and approaches; Pre-integration period and beginnings of integration – three communities (1947-1957); Common market and temptations of deeper integration (1958-1971); Enlargement of the community and deepening of integration (1972-1984); From European communities to the European Union (1985-1993); Assurance of the achieved level of integration and expansion to the East (1994 till today); Constitutional project and integration perspectives; Integration process – fields of public policy in the EU; Regulatory policy: internal market, politics of competition, social and environmental policy; The EU budget and the transfer policy: common agricultural policy, developmental policy and cohesion policy; Macroeconomic policy: economic and monetary union, employment policy and taxation policy; Policy of protection of the EU citizens: economic, social and political rights; judiciary and internal affairs; asylum, visas and immigration policy; The EU foreign policy: trade policy and foreign economic relations, foreign, security and defence policy
