Задовољство нам је да вас обавестимо да ће Дороти Нојес (Dorothy Noyes), професорка Охајо Стејт Универзитета и директорка Мершон центра за међународне безбедносне студије (Mershon Center for International Security Studies), у уторак 18. априла 2023. године са почетком у 17 часова одржати онлајн предавање преко платформе ZOOM на Факултету политичких наука Универзитета у Београду.
Професорка Нојес ће говорити на тему “EXEMPLARITY IN GLOBAL POLITICS: THE CASE OF COLD WAR THRESHOLD-CROSSINGS”.
Thick description of resonant political performances comes easily to interpretive scholars like me. The “social dramas” of modern politics draw heavily on exemplars from national cultural pasts as they strive to set examples for the future. In this paper, however, I turn from culturalism to interactionism by exploring the international circulation of exemplary performances. Today, such circulation is familiar in social movements, but in the Cold War it was also a feature of high politics. I discuss two iconic threshold-crossings, Nixon’s 1972 visit to China and Sadat’s 1977 trip to Jerusalem, to disentangle the transmission pathways that made these episodes possible, then influential in their turns. Interpersonal leader networks, new media affordances, and the prestige mechanisms of international society facilitated transformative threshold-crossings in the era of détente, but later came to undermine their political efficacy, as we can see from the recent cases of Trump’s visit to the Korean DMZ and the Abraham Accords.
