Critical perspectives on the emerging forms of global solidarities

Our main goal for this one-day international conference is to explore the phenomenon of global solidarity and the ways it can be problematised, interpreted and understood by actors of different geopolitical and social positionalities. We are looking especially for alternative approaches to dominating discourses of liberalism and methodological nationalism. Despite the presence of the global phenomena in contemporary social sciences for more than half of the century, a need for a better-grounded understanding of how supranational soft governance mechanisms are transforming our institutions, participatory models, and practices remains. While the emphasis is predominantly on legislation, it is also relevant to consider how the other forms of social reality function under these circumstances. We accept contributions based on all directions of social critical theory and research (for example: critical social theory, cultural studies, neo-Marxism, constructivism, postcolonial theory, and critical political economy).

The key problems related to solidarity in the global context this conference aims to find the answer(s) to are the following:

  1. Sorting out the key terminology: transnational, supranational, international domains of solidarity – what are the differences and what do they teach us about solidarity in the global context?
  2. How radical otherness relates to global solidarity: approaching the outlawed, marginalised, subaltern, indigenous etc.
  3. How do normative, governance and policy mechanisms facilitate or restrain supranational solidarity?
  4. Nonformal, participative, soft and mixed mechanisms and experiences of solidarity beyond  the formal diplomacy frameworks
  5. The limits of multiculturalism and identity politics to explain solidarity above the national terms and intersectional potential to empower supranational solidarity dynamics
  6. The alternative frameworks and practices of transnational solidarity in domains of transnational migrations and security.

We invite early and mid-career scholars to submit 300-word abstracts (including title, author/s, affiliation, ORC ID, contact and type of presentation: online or on-site) by filling in the form HERE. Our target group are young scholars interested in reflexive engagement with contemporary social, law and political science, aimed to contribute to understanding the complexities of contemporary social and political reality. The other categories of scholars might be accepted as well. The form of the event is hybrid, therefore there is the option to join online from a distance. Participation in the conference is free of charge.

The working language of the conference is English.

The event is organised in cooperation between the Dialoguing Posts Network and the Institute of Criminological and Sociological Research. As the main output of the event, we plan to prepare a special issue of the Journal of the Institute of Criminological and Sociological Research based on the presentations given at the event.
