Democracy and Society in Europe: Latest Insights from Political Science and Sociology

The Department of Political and Social Sciences (SPS) at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence announces the fifth edition of its summer academy, which will take place on 9-13 September 2024. It offers talented master’s students in the social sciences, coming from all over Europe, a week of full immersion into the stimulating intellectual environment of cutting-edge research and debates at the EUI.

The theme of the SPS Summer Academy is Democracy and Society in Europe: Latest Insights from Political Science and Sociology. The programme consists of lectures by some of the SPS professors including Stefano Guzzini, Simon Hix, Filip Kostelka, Arnout van de Rijt, and Waltraud Schelkle; a guided tour to visit the city of Florence; workshops held by postdoctoral fellows; as well as attendance at a keynote lecture given by Professor Ellen Immergut.

The summer academy is free of charge, and financial support is available to cover travel and accommodation costs of students in financial need. Participants from Widening countries (which include the Central and Eastern Europe region and a few other countries) are all eligible for a full reimbursement of their travel and accommodation costs (of up to €800). Only enrolled master’s students (or fresh master’s graduates) are eligible. Students already enrolled in a PhD programme are not eligible and should consult other opportunities offered by the SPS Department. The application deadline is May 15.
